Welcome along to the first Sunday Book Review here on The Student Finance Blog, if you follow us, you will probably have realized that we’ve been planning book reviews for a while, well finally here it is.
Today we will be discussing The Student’s Guide to Exam Success (second edition) by Eileen Tracy which was published back in 2006. Most students at the moment are preparing for their end of year exams which makes this review extremely relevant to many of you at the moment.
The first thing I have to say about this book is that this isn’t just you usual run-of-the-mill examination tips book, it goes into so much detail within so many different aspects of fears and processes one would go through during exam period. Eileen Tracy does a great job of holding your hand and easing you into a very stressful period in your University life. It’s so refreshing to read something which is written in clear English in a relaxed tone, we being right at the start with helpful techniques and tips on clearing your mind and getting yourself 100% focused. The book also discusses the importance of keeping yourself healthy to keep your mind in tip-top condition.
The book then explores some time-management techniques, breaks and how to effectively get started, which is usually the hardest part, some of the things here you will probably have thought about yourself, but some will make you go aha. But always remember to find your own techniques which will suit you best. I really enjoyed reading the memory techniques section, some of the items discussed mid-way through the book are simply brilliant and I’m sure will help many of you tremendously. Eileen even runs through things you should do on the day and during your exams.
Positives
- Great Detail
- Nearly everything is covered comprehensively
- A very knowledgeable author
- Can produce real results
- Relaxed and simple to understand
- Great price at the moment
- Less than 200 pages
Negatives
- Many sections are ’stating the obvious’
- Can’t think of any more!
Conclusion
The Student’s Guide to Exam Success can be an excellent companion to your exam season, it delves into so many topics from essays to what to actually do on the day. What really impressed me is the amount of section devoted to aspects which helps the reader understand their own mind, memory and personality, they can then adapt their revision technique in accordance. An excellent read and you will be surprised how much information you will instantly absorb from The Student’s Guide to Exam Success. The book is available here and many other books shops and online retailers.
