Most Universities and Colleges are closing for the Easter break this Friday (or next week), this gives you students a few weeks off. Finances are usually pretty tight for students at the moment, and you really do want to catch up with old friends and make the most of the short break.
This Easter break is the perfect opportunity to grab yourself a part-time job and create a small financial buffer to make the Easter holidays and the start of the next term a little more comfortable. But already I can hear you worrying about one of two things, or even both: -
1. Easter is for revision. If I get a part-time job, when will I have the change to revise for the upcoming exams?
Solution: The key word to remember is ‘Part-Time’, with anything under 16 hours per week there is enough time every day to revise, although if you really do feel like that you have a tremendous amount of work to do, take this into consideration. Remember about up and coming deadlines for assignments etc also. It can be a nice little break to go away and do some work a couple of hours per night and de-clutter your brain. Don’t let anyone else make this decision for you, if you feel like you will have enough free time for a part-time job and do want to earn some extra cash, then go for it. But if you really are worried about your workload, then the best decision would be to fully concentrate on your University or College work and revision. And remember, no more than 16 hours per week, unless you have absolutely nothing else to do.
2. Times are hard at the moment, where am I going to find a part-time job over the Easter break with so many people out of work at the moment.
Solution: It is very true that jobs are very hard to find at the moment. With so many people being laid-off due to the recession. You will just have to get yourself out there and apply for as many jobs as possible. Here are some ideas:
- Print of around 10 copies of your CV, if you don’t know how to write a CV, there are many resources available online and many books on the subject.
- Go into town or your local high street and hand out your CV’s to some local businesses and shops. You may need to print out some more CV’s.
- Restaurants, pubs and clubs are great places to ask because they usually become a little busier during the Easter holidays with students home from Uni and children home from school.
- Don’t give up, just keep handing out your CV’s and ask around, most jobs are taken by word of mouth.
Even if you get a part-time job paying minimum wage (which is currently £4.77 for people aged 18-21, £5.73 for people over 22 years old) it can make a large difference to your finances, especially if you’re the type of person who just lives week by week not knowing ow you’re going to survive the rest of the term. So just get yourself out there and make things a little easier for yourselves.
